Until about 9 months ago, I did not know that a sub-genre of electronic music called Trap existed. It mixes forceful lyrics with various fast time division hi-hats and layered synthesizers to give a blend between hip hop and Electronic Dance Music (EDM).

Variations of Trap have been around for about a decade, but only recently has the genre been taken seriously and many major DJs and audio engineers are now producing it.

The most famous Trap Producer/DJ is Diplo, who is best known for his collaborations with Tïesto and DJ Fresh, but the likes of Dillon Francis and Flosstradamus are also extremely popular in the Trap scene.

Here are a few tracks that I would recommend to anyone who is looking to get a flavour of what Trap music really is:

Over the next year or so, Trap music will surely become increasingly popular amongst EDM lovers as there are more and more Trap producers emerging every day. Trap is a very particular type of music; it can either be loved or hated.
